Widely known for her creative culinary creations, @kbtable is one of the finest full-service catering and event planning companies in Houston. When the occasion calls for gathering and celebration, KB Table is the one to call.
We caught up with Kelli to find out where she draws inspiration, how she manages a healthy work-life balance, what she would tell others looking to start their own business, and so much more. Here’s a peek into our convo:
How do you beat the business “burnout”?
Rest and remember to make time for yourself. I believe establishing a healthy work-life balance from the start is key to avoiding the burnout.
How do you manage work-life balance?
I generally start off my morning with at least two cups of coffee and getting in a good workout. If I don’t work out first thing in the morning, then it’s not going to happen. There simply aren’t enough hours in the day! When I have a weekend off from a catering event (which is pretty rare) I am usually so worn out that I would rather just get in my pajamas with a good bottle of wine and catch up on binge worthy tv-shows. I know, I know, I’m such a grandma, but I like to consider myself an old-soul.
Instagram Stories or Feed Posts – which are your favorite?
Both! I usually don’t have time to scroll through Instagram Stories during the day because I’m cooking. That’s part of the reason why I think InstaTV is so neat! I love to “bookmark” a video or post so I can go back and reference/watch it at a later time.
What do you wish someone would have told you before you launched KB Table?
You are going to fail and it will be okay. No matter how many years of schooling, experience, or knowledge you have, failure is inevitable. I've learned to accept the mistakes I've made, learn how to avoid repeating them and keep moving forward. After all, experiencing failure makes success more gratifying.
Has social media changed how you approach business? If so, how so?
Without a doubt! Instagram is truly the best form of free advertisement. I have received so much business just from being on Instagram.
Most valuable piece of advice.
From my beloved Father, who passed away almost four years ago. My father always wrote me the most beautiful hand-written letters that were so inspirational and poignant. I still take out this letter and read it when I need some reassurance that I’m on the right path. We had such a special close-nit bond, especially in the kitchen, that is where some of our fondest moments took place. My dad was a huge part and I instill this piece of wisdom in my business practice every day!
“You can accomplish anything in life you set your mind to. Believe in yourself, your goals and dreams and never let go of them. Life presents many road blocks along the way and at times the challenges seem insurmountable. Keep God and family in your life, confidence, and believe in yourself. Keep plowing through, over and around life’s many road blocks and success and opportunities lie just beyond them.”
If you could pick one person’s brain about your field, who would it be?
Ah! I dread this question because I have so many “culinary muses”, that have had an impact in one way or another on my cooking style, techniques and practices. Ruth Reichl, Alice Waters, Danny Meyer (Union Square Hospitality Group and most well-known for Shake Shack) and Ina Garten (what chef doesn’t die for a “Fool-proof” Ina recipe?).
What’s in store for the future of KB Table?
My dream is to have a storefront market/boutique grocery store. I have the exact vision and layout in my head—now it’s just time to bring it to life! Much of my inspiration comes from small bodegas and local farmers markets and flea markets throughout Europe. There is something so magical about the small mom and pop stores. I get excited just thinking about it!
